What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. It is most commonly treated by dermatologists.

Hyperhidrosis can be diffuse or localized (excessive sweating in the armpits, feet and hands). A simple interview and, if necessary, biological tests during a consultation with Docteur Molinari should first rule out any internal pathology.

In the vast majority of cases, excessive sweating is isolated and no cause is found. Depending on the individual situation, different therapeutic strategies are proposed to treat hyperhydrosis (axillary, palmar or plantar).

Solutions to combat Hyperhidrosis and excessive sweating

In the mildest cases of hyperhydrosis, the use of specific soaps or creams may be useful or even sufficient. They are usually the first step in treatment.

On the other hand, for the most severe cases of diffuse sweating, which is a daily handicap, oral medications are proposed to treat hyperhydrosis. However, this solution has its drawbacks: chronic treatment, frequent side effects, partial efficacy…

The cases that are generally easiest to understand are localized hyperhydrosis:

Axillary hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating in the armpits)
palmar hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating of the hands)
Plantar hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating of the feet)

Two treatments for axillary hyperhidrosis are particularly interesting, and both are performed by Dr. Molinari:

MiraDry treatment: a revolutionary medical procedure for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis. [Read more+]
Botulinum toxin injections: known for some years for their effectiveness in treating excessive sweating in localized areas.

MIRADRY: DEFINITIVE TREATMENT FOR AXILLARY HYPERHIDROSIS.

Miradry is a non-invasive technology that uses localized ultrashort-wave pulses to safely eliminate sweat glands. This system provides a permanent reduction in underarm perspiration and associated odor, unlike other currently available treatments that have only a temporary effect.

Because the sweat glands do not regenerate after treatment, the results are permanent. For people who want to treat an embarrassing or pathological sweating phenomenon (axillary hyperhydrosis): MiraDry is truly THE medical treatment to consider.

The MiraDry treatment consists of the application of ultra-short waves precisely at the level of the sweat glands, allowing 80% of the glands responsible for perspiration to be permanently suppressed under local anesthesia, usually in a single session.

According to clinical studies (MiraDry is FDA approved and CE marked), perspiration is reduced by 80%. There is no transfer of sweat to other areas of the body.

This technique for treating axillary hyperhydrosis leaves no scars and has the distinct advantage of being almost immediately effective, with results noticeable as early as the day after the MiraDry treatment.

BOTULINUM TOXIN INJECTIONS FOR AXILLARY HYPERHYDROSIS

The use of botulinum toxin as a local injection to treat excessive underarm sweating is a safe and highly effective technique. It is painless and can be performed in the office in a matter of minutes. Side effects are virtually nonexistent.

It’s a very simple and painless treatment. The effect on hyperhydrosis is constant within a few days of treatment.

The disadvantages are the price (600 euros for an injection in both armpits) and the limited duration of the effect (between 6 and 12 months on average).

Treatment of this type of localized hyperhydrosis is less straightforward than for underarms.

If local drying treatments fail, ionopheresis can be proposed. The disadvantage of this treatment is that it is time consuming and may not be sufficient for the most severe cases.
Prolonged daily foot and hand baths in appropriate solutions are required to achieve an effect within a few weeks, which is only maintained with regular and frequent maintenance sessions. However, the advantage of this treatment is that it can be performed at home with a modest investment.

Botulinum toxin is suggested for this indication and is a highly effective However, pain at the injection sites may be a limitation of this treatment.
Currently, there is no treatment equivalent to Miradry for the definitive treatment of sweating of the feet and hands.

The miradry procedure is non-invasive: it does not involve any operations or surgical intervention. Before the procedure, temporary identification markers are placed on the skin surface to direct the treatment.

Local anesthesia is administered in the armpits for patient comfort. The Miradry system handpiece is then placed at the level of the marks and the ultra-short waves are emitted onto the area to be treated.
